A Christian Perspective on Species Protection

The Bible clearly shows that all created species were declared good in their own right by God. Humankind's role is to be faithful stewards of all creation.

And God said, "Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky." 21 So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living and moving thing with which the water teems, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 22 God blessed them and said, "Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth." 23 And there was evening, and there was morning--the fifth day. Gen 1:20

15 The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. Gen 2:16

And God said, "This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: 13 I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 14 Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, 15 I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Gen. 9:12

These are just a couple of Biblical foundational statements about why wildlife, and all life on earth is important. Not because of something they can do for us or some use we can put them to or even because they are an integral part of functioning ecosystems and the biosphere, but because God created them (whether you want to believe through the evolutionary process or instantaneously 6000 years ago!) and declared them good. He then went on further to charge humankind with care of His beautiful creation and made a covenant with ALL the earth and its creatures to never see them destroyed.

As a Christian, I believe that it's not about me or us as humans. This universe is God's handiwork, and we're here to faithful stewards of that handiwork in our little corner of the universe called earth. As I believe Cal DeWitt of the Au Sable Institute said to Republican Congressional Representatives when they were trying to gut the Endangered Species Act in 1994, all creatures are a reflection of God and can tell us something of God. Creation is the "book of general revelation" that works hand-in-hand with Scripture to tell us of the nature of God. Losing a species through extinction because of our own greed and sin is like literally ripping a page out of Scripture.

We who shirk our responsibilities as stewards will be held accountable as it states in Revelation 11:18 "...the time has come to destroy those who destroy the earth."
