Remember Our Humanity

This is one of those times as a nation when we can define ourselves by our political will. Will we choose to act to protect the wild places and wild creatures that are critical to the real character of this country, or will we, in our arrogance and greed look the other way while uncaring, short-sighted individuals sell that character for short term gain?

When I hike in my local park, I see a beautiful, if overused wild area, with many creatures, so far relatively untouched by development or business interests of any kind. This park has been home to many birds, coyotes, small rodents, snakes and a real refuge for the many stressed and overworked people who live nearby in Los Angeles. I feel this is a microcosim of all the wild parts of America. We all need our wild spaces, whether we realize it or not, and we sell them or lease them or otherwise harm them at our peril. They will not recreate themsleves.
