Her Name Is John

John is a Desert Tortoise that my family "rescued" near Joshua Tree, California. My Mom and Dad had a weekend cabin near there and one day we came across this tortoise on the dirt road. It had a deformity on the top of its shell that appeared to be an old wound of some kind, so we brought it back to our home in Orange County. That was in 1955.

Since that time we discovered that "John" was actually female and the Desert Tortoise has been listed as endangered. She lives in my backyard in a burrow that she personally designed herself and I'm pleased to say that I've known this wise creature for 50 years.
