Opprotunities Lost

Extinct species might have held the cures for some of our human afflictions, but now we may never know.

Recently I learned that the saliva of the desert's Gila Monster contains a key element for a new treatment for diabetes. It made me wonder how many other animals hold cures to some of our human ailments, but maybe we just haven't discovered them yet. It also made me wonder if some of the animals that are no longer with us could have provided medical assistance that has now been irrevocably lost. Once a species is gone for good, we will never know. That's just one reason why we should preserve all animals and their habitat everywhere. Each species lost makes us poorer.
