Ignorance

Growing up, my sister and I were taught to respect nature, for there is no more powerful force.

Growing up, my sister and I were taught to respect nature, for there is no more powerful force. We would hike through the mountains of Idaho, learning which streams were safe to drink from , looking for the spoor of animals that passed before us. Fox, cougar, elk, mule dear, skunk, porcupine, numerous birds and small animals all inhabited the area. Today, most of this land is fenced off from public use, cougars have been forced out, elk and deer have moved on due to poor grazing conditions and poor water quality. No one in there right mind would even think of drinking from any of the streams. Man, in our ignorance, has continually through the years destroyed all that is around us. We want faster cars, more shopping options, more money made from our crops and livestock. We have neglected our surroundings in order to make ourselves "happy". But truly, this is ignorance, for without a healthy eco-system we have nothing. In our ignorance do we truly believe that we will find ways to keep our environments livable by destroying the animals and plants that are such integral parts of the world? Do we, in our ignorance, believe that money is the only key to happiness? Do we call this ignorance, or arrogance? Why is my right to make more money and have more stores to shop from more important than a wolf's need to eat, a deer's need for shelter, and a deteriortated quality of life for our future children?
