Living on the Edge

Living on the Edge

We live in the mountains of the Carson Range of the Sierra - the edge between urban development and wild mountains. Wildlife is an important part of our every day life and we revere their sanctity.

Bears come to visit our pond, the cubs taking an occasional dip. Deer pass through almost daily. Cougar leave sign and one once came back to a nearby kill three nights in a row - the deep growls making our hair stand on end. We share the mountain with skunks, raccoons, rabbits, and porcupine. And, we are occasionally blessed with a visit from a regal bobcat, a photo of which accompanies this story - appearing briefly, then disappearing like smoke into the sage. A totem perhaps.
I certainly hope our government can figure out how precious to our citizens and to their children and grandchildren is the wildlife with which we share this planet and the environment on which we are all dependent for our health and welfare.
