Animals are a fascinating part of nature and their presence enriches the human experience. Seeing wildlife is something to be appreciated, like enjoying a beautiful landscape, art, or music. We can also learn much from their behavior (such as their abilty to tell when a tsunami or other natural disaster is coming and their lack of man-made "morality"). Understanding animals can also help us understand what sets humanity apart from other animals. We should use the intelligence that enables us to have such a great impact on the earth and all animals in a responsible manner. It is especially unethical to not protect animals when it is our own overpopulation (and resulting ever increasing land use and resource consumption) that causes them to be endangered, and we have the intelligence to know this.
