The Shadow; Dedicated to the Wolf, King of the Wilderness

The Shadow; Dedicated to the Wolf, King of the Wilderness

This is a poem I wrote after my first experience with the wolves of Yellowstone. But, it wasn't just the wolves that brought a tear to my eye. It was seeing beauty I thought I would never see and watching the animals that live there.

There he stood, a dark silhouette against the moonlit sky.
I was mesmerized.
For a fleeting moment, our eyes met and then he was gone.
Inside the darkness I heard his lonely cry; an endless lament of freedom lost.
I heard the sorrow of the disappearing wilderness that once belonged to many of his kind.
As his voice faded slowly in the distance, I realized that I was the stranger in this land.
This was his domain; the cover of night his home.
He will forever be the Shadow; the dark silhouette against the moonlit sky.
